Hiya folks!
Hope everyone is well...I must catch up with the archives or perhpas someone can fill me in with a brief resume of the main points I've missed..... Back from France yesterday..... I had a dose of the Dreaded Lurgie the day before I came home and I was really unfit for the looooooooong drive back. Painfully swollen throat...all those other gland-thingies one usually remains oblivious of made their presence felt as well. I couldn't get comfortable not matter what I did .....and the journey took 10 hours so it wasn't much fun. But I shouldn't whinge because apart from this sting in the tail the rest of my holiday was great. Weather was a bit in and out...but mostly sunny and yet not TOO hot to get around. I harvested lots of apples from the tree, the walnuts are clearly going to be a bumper crop too....and we had a great day at Deauville races. Not to mention a fun (in an offbeat kind of way) day at a little jazz concert in the orchard next to a local village. All the old standards, delivered in classic Jazz laid back style, with the added benefit of a French I feel a lot better today...and rested....and can recommend (entirely for medicinal reasons ) Rose D'Anjou chilled from the fridge and doled out in liberal amounts. Nice pics of Rusty Mustard. Love it when he smiles. He looks WELL these days. Good for him. |

Welcome back LB... the stay in France sounds utterly marvelous...
Was travel, vis a vis security a problem? Did they want to cut open all your apples and uncork the wine to check for banned liquids? But of course, you weren't flying, so maybe everything was normal, more or less. I guess you've had a chance to read back a bit... hopeful news about 3:10 to Yuma, all the pictures of Russell on the AG set in New York... and absolutely no news of any NYC incidents.. not even a Gawker spotting away from the filming locations. ![]() |

, anyone??Hi, LB! "The dreaded Lurchie?"...for a minute there, I thought you might have dropped in "over there." My bad. I'm having a frighteningly industrous weekend. Yesterday, I cleaned the fridge and washed the dog. The upside was, I got a clean dog out of the bargain, but now I have two hamsters Feeble attempt at humor,folks. I love our "count-town" to AGY! In a few days, less then 80 to go! No hummers yet. Anybody else?? Ta, for now. |

Security etc.... | ||
|
Wash your mouth out C4C!
Then again...now I come to think of it..... Thanks BC....it was fun. The security issue isn't really noticeable on the Ships. Two points: Firstly you drive in with your possessions and they get your whole profile in one glance out of their booth. Secondly it would take a fairly large amount of explosives to damage a ship....and even then it would more than likely be possible to stage an effective evacuation in those waters (the navy would be there pretty quickly). And the terrorists are after maximum loss of life. The security at the Channel ports tends to be related to Contraband and Illegal immigration. We have more checks getting back IN to Britain than getting out. Which is probably due to the fact that there isn't much call for smuggled English wine on the other side of the channel. Rob flew over from Nottingham to Paris (Charles de Gaulle) on Sunday. Reading between the lines I think he found it a bit of a strain. Lots of security measures at Nottingham and about a one hour delay. Lots of armed police and Servicemen about the place on patrol....which is a comfort in one way of course...but it still brings the risk home to you in a big way. Rob was alone so I daresay it played on his mind a bit. Wasn't allowed to take his paperback on board....so he was forced to read the inflight magazine .He certainly looked a bit strained when he came through arrivals at CDG. (Not much noticeable security there BTW) He kind of curled up on the back seat and complained of stomach cramps. I guess it was tension. He imporved once we got clear of Paris. The pleasures of modern travel huh? Yuma....glad to hear things are moving on this!! Would love to see Russ in a western. I ALWAYS had the hots for the handsome bad guys in westerns when I was a nipper. |

Afternoon, All...
LB, maybe that's what's been wrong all along over there! The Lurchers have the Lurgies?? Could we have a medical breakthru, here? Nah, too easy. I'm off in a few minutes to see "World Trade Center." Will let you all know what I think, later: have a rest of the day! |

I'm clicking, I'm clicking....Ivani, I will not let you down!
I was traveling most of the week and saw "hello" before I saw Ivani's post. I've clicked whenever I could...last night, today and on the road. The office was too hectic Thursday, Friday and Saturday to click. I'm clicking. I read AGY during my luch breaks at the seminar and on the plane. Glad you are feeling better, c4c, and I hope our Rusty continues to do better and that LB picks up, too. If I have missed anyone...my good wishes to you as well. Hope some of us KC folks might get together for AGY....I have a friend who'd come along...I always treat her to RC movies and she's great fun. Needs a lift. I'll check in when I can but I'm with you in spirit. It's nice to know you're all here when I need a pick-me-up. I'm hoping some things will resolve soon...I'm pooped. Oh, I am a lonely painter. I live in a box of paints.... Joni Mitchell "A Case of You" |

LB... poor Rob... glad his malaise cleared up for the duration of the visit. I find it hard to believe that a paperback book is banned. What earthly security reason is there for that? I can understand many of the other restrictions, tough as they are... but no books or magazines? Short flights don't have movies... and the inflight mag's are business oriented propaganda.
We'll be flying domestically the 2nd of Dec.... and as far as I know, from the latest info, we're only restricted by the liquid and gel bans. I plan to fly with my iPod.. tho' needless to say, I'll check that it's acceptible before departure. Don't want to be throwing that in the banned objects bin. I understand that we can take traditional lipsticks... but not the liquidy type, but we're not allowed mascara in tubes. Hello...??? how much dangerous explosive can one jam into a .22 oz, 1/2 inch diameter Revlon tube with brush? Years ago, there was a type of "cake" mascara available... it should still be legal. But do they still make it? It came in little rectangular plastic compacts with a little brush. Do they still sell tooth powder? Or will one have to make do with a toothbrush and chewing gum for fresh breath, since toothpaste, mouthwash and such are banned from carry on. With the increase in lost luggage these days, if one is stranded, one needs a few necessary toiletries, not to mention some fresh unmentionables and a change of clothes. I'm appalled that the UK has banned all carry on luggage. At least we haven't gone that far here in NA. Flying, which was unpleasant enough the past couple of years, has just become almost unbearable. I will not fly for jaunts for which one can drive, ferry, ride a bus or train in a couple hours, that much is certain. We waste so much time getting to the airports, going through security and waiting, one can often do just as well, with less hassle, using other forms of transport. ![]() |

Thanks for the photo, swept. He looks so young there.
Welcome back, LB. I hope the dreaded lurgie is long gone. I was talking with a friend about the latest terrorist threat to air travel. She is going to Japan in a few weeks. It seems like the higher the level of technology that we deal with, the more vulnerable it is. I think there was a Star Trek quote about that. Yes, I found it, by Scotty: ""Aye sir, the more they overtech the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain."" With all the threats of terrorism, I remind myself that by far the most dangerous thing I did in the Middle East was the taxi drive from the Israeli/Jordanian border to Amman. The taxi driver was a maniac even by Middle Eastern standards. All my philosophising about how safety is an illusion didn't keep me from being terrified. The cerebral cortex can have all the high fallutin' ideas that it wants, but the reptilian brain want to survive. They should use lawyers instead of rats in laboratory experiments. You don't have to worry about the lab techs getting attached to them and there are things rats just won't do.

Here's an excellent article about the current methods aimed at airport security:
www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2006/08/17/airport_futility/ I'll post it in the Library as well in case people don't have accounts. |

Ya know cal... you've hit it on the head.
Our perceptions of danger tend to embrace the exotic and far fetched... while the real, statistical danger is much more mundane... like a frenetic, insanely dangerous cab driver! I was reading the marvelous book... Freakinomics... and in it, the author pointed out that conventional wisdom, and perceived dangers, are so often off the mark.. and almost exotically unlikely .. compared to everyday dangers. We worry obsessively about kids being kidnapped while walking home from school.. but statistically, 10 times more kids are killed or injured in the family automobile while being driven home from school by overly anxious parents. One travels and worries about becoming a hostage or victim of war... when in fact, our greatest danger is being in a traffic accident. ![]() |

Re: Security etc.... | ||

Kittie... that Salon piece is superb... wow.. I hadn't read it before I made my comments earlier, but they sure echo mine.
And I note it's an airline pilot who wrote it. I can tell you that my brother, a senior airline pilot with one of the major US lines totally concurs with the thoughts it expresses. He's often told us that if terrorists are not detected by solid law enforcement work beforehand, it's always possible for terrorists to find a way to bring down a plane. Some security measures are absolutely absurd and lead to nothing but delayed flights and angry passengers. My brother, the pilot of a flight, in full uniform, wearing his picture ID's and credentials, has been stopped by TSA people for random searches. That means that the plane can't be prepped for take off until he's on board, but they're delaying him. Where is the logic? He's a senior pilot with 20+ years experience. Does TSA honestly think he's a risk of bringing on board a banned item? WTF? If he wanted to bring down a plane all he'd have to do was fly it into the ground. No gels, guns or box cutters required. Where's the logic in pulling aside and searching a young American mother traveling with her two kids on their way to visit grandma in Baltimore, wearing school backpacks. Their identities were established, and their tickets valid.. but no... 20 minutes was spent searching them, in a random check, for no reason other than to avoid any possibility of being accused of "profiling" the Middle Eastern passengers who were to board the same flight but were not checked or searched. I witnessed this with my own eyes. ![]() |

Re: Security etc.... | ||

The random searches are ridiculous. They need to be searching for suspicious people. Not every tenth person or person that printed their boarding pass online. That happened to me in Richmond. I was searched because I did my boarding pass at home.
Loved the video, Barbie. No books on the airplane. I would go insane with nothing to watch or read for a long flight. ![]() TOFOG |

Quote: am I going to do on a 7 hr flight to Dublin next Saturday. Last time I checked I didn't own one book made of liguid or Gel. LB..glad to hear your feeling up to snuff again. I think I need another grin. Opps that looks like more than a grin. ![]() Ivani..........I'm clicking as fast as I can. Opps the Bunnies lost. Rabbitohs Go Down as Sea Eagles Swoop on NRL Top Four The South Sydney Rabbitohs have gone down to the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles 38 points to 16 at Brookvale Oval this afternoon in front of 19,253 fans. The Rabbitohs led 12 points to 10 at the half time break, but a lack of possession and injuries hurt the red and greens in their quest to seal a third straight victory. The Sea Eagles scored first through their fullback Brett Stewart, his first of three tries, in the fifth minute of play. Ten minutes later, Rabbitohs' winger Paul Mellor scored a try in his 200th NRL match. The Rabbitohs attacked the short right-hand side, with Mellor eventually beating three defenders to score the four-pointer. Beau Champion's conversion gave the Rabbitohs a two-point lead midway through the first half. The Rabbitohs extended that lead to eight when try-scoring freak Nathan Merritt scored his 21st try of the season four minutes later. Prop Scott Geddes charged up field and got an offload away to Manase Manuokafoa. Manuokafoa drew two defenders and got a great ball away to Merritt who lunged out to score. Champion kicked the conversion to give the Rabbitohs a 12-4 lead. In the 33rd minute, Manly's replacement hooker Shayne Dunley scored a try set up by halfback Matt Orford. Orford's conversion sent the sides to the sheds at 12-10 in favour of the visitors. The Rabbitohs were playing good football, controlling the ball and punishing the Sea Eagles in defence. Kane Cleal was dynamic when he came on to the field against his former Club, dishing out some heavy attacking runs and equally impressive defence. The Sea Eagles struck early in the second half, opening up a quick 10-point lead through tries to Steve Menzies and Stewart with Orford converting both. The Rabbitohs struck back through Kiwi second-rower Joe Galuvao. The Rabbitohs capitalised on a Manly mistake and swung the ball wide right to a rampaging Galuvao to score. Unfortunately that is where it ended for the Rabbitohs with Steve Matai scoring two tries and Stewart a third in the final 22 minutes of the match. Orford converted two of the tries to give the Sea Eagles a 38-16 win. The Rabbitohs were brave in defeat, missing David Peachey before the match due to a calf injury meaning seven postional changes took place, and then picking up three more injuries throughout the game including a shoulder problem to Yileen Gordon, a likely broken thumb for Joe Williams and a leg injury to Beau Champion. Congratulations must go to Paul Mellor on scoring a try in his 200th NRL game and to Fetuli Talanoa who made his first grade debut today. The Rabbitohs will now take on the North Queensland Cowboys next Sunday afternoon at 2:30pm at Telstra Stadium. |

Well, I'm back from seeing the film that started most of this insanity: World Trade Center.
Very, very well done and probably scarier than any dumb movie called Snakes On A Plane ever would be. A word of caution: if you are claustrophobic or can become claustrophobic, easily, sit near the rear where you can get up and get some fresh air once and awhile. It's that real. |
