Cal, I'm not having problems posting, but Yuku was down again earlier this morning. Seems to be happening more than with ezboard, and most times in the late morning for me, which would be very early morning for you guys. From yesterday: Gosh, if it was a wig, why would he go with something that length? You don't see reporters with hair like that these days and it is not an attractive look. Good question. One possible reason might be what I read in one of the articles or blog entries recently, that Russell is playing a 'ruffled and frustrated reporter'. His looks would certainly fit this description. However, the original Cal is neither ruffled nor frustrated. I'm wondering why they feel they have to make all those changes to the character. Great set report from Murph!

From Murph's report... what interested me in particular.. He shared that he is wearing a wig for this role. His real hair - very long for Nottingham - is tied into a pony tail under the wig. I felt the wig (at his invitation) and, while of top notch quality, it was definitely dry to the touch with no life of its own. It was nice to hear the Nottingham is moving forward, if very slowly. Ridley is scouting locations near London. The SAG AFTRA situation makes the future unsettled. I remain concerned about the damned SAG situation. No one has the heart for a strike but the leadership of the union and the part time actors. ----------------- About the John Adams series ... IMHO, the costumes are actually quite accurate to the period. I'm a bit of a geek about such things as many of you know. As I mentioned yesterday, the founding fathers came from varied backgrounds... some wealthy, some patrician [Jefferson] and some more rural and humble. I've had the good fortune to examine Colonial period clothing in several museums. There is a normal tendency to "save" the finest clothing in attics and trunks, so not all that much everyday work attire exists, but there is some. You can see the homespun, homemade qualities that are in great contrast to the fine waistcoats and lace cuffs made with imported yard goods, by the best tailors and dressmakers. -------------------- Yuku is burping a lot, isn't it? I think Simms as Cal was quite frustrated ... but I don't think I'd call him "ruffled" either. Frankly, I hope the film SoP is quite different from the English series. It would be roundly criticized if it were a slavish copy. This is a similar situation as when a film is made from a favored book.... you just can't bring all the elements of a long book into a 2 hour film. It must be adapted and it's essence distilled. Perhaps one can look at the mini-series as being an entity that stands on it's own, and the film is a variation on the theme. "Either you "get" him, or you don't"

It was a dream Luke had wanted to achieve last year, but was left out of the Kiwis tour to England. "To tell you the truth, it was last year and it pretty much broke me in half not making it," said Luke. "This is another year and hopefully it's a better year. "To play any game for the Kiwis is probably the best feeling you could ever have." But the 20-year-old knows he needs to keep improving his own game to earn a Test debut and wants injured halfback Wing to become his personal trainer so he can learn directly from the player he's modelled his own game on. I'm griping about the downtime episodes, but once I've gotten used to this I do kind of like all the features. shhh This old dog appears to have learned a new trick. That is so cool about Murph's set visit, I only wish she'd been able to be an extra. (those museums are exhausting though). Then I'd have two guaranteed outbursts during the movie. "There's Murph!" and "That's not Russell's ass!" LOL However, the original Cal is neither ruffled nor frustrated. I'm wondering why they feel they have to make all those changes to the character. My guess is that is the way Russell saw the character as written in the script, and he's also making an effort not to copy the previous interpretation of the character. There would be a lot of cultural differences brought about by the change in setting alone (a Brit politician is not going to act exactly the same way as a US politician, for instance), and for the characters to react and be the same as in the series wouldn't be true to the setting. Interesting conflicting stories about how the NRL higher ups are reacting to the tackles. It can't be both ways, so some of the media outlets appear to be delving into the fiction genre. This was about the 3rd time it has happened to me, but happily at least it hasn't lasted that long. I also like several of the features, though, so an occasional glitch will be acceptable. News all over this morning of the death of Anthony Minghella, only 54. Oscar Winner Minghella Dies at 54 Having started late he only directed a few films, but I love Truly, Madly, Deeply, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and especially The English Patient. TEP was actually the first movie I saw multiple times in the theater, I think it was 6 or 7 and was also the first DVD that I bought where I listened to (and greatly enjoyed) the commentary. I just saw a comment by a blogger that had me giggling. This lady had previously reported on attending the Shamrock Fest and seeing Russell singing with GBS. Today she commented that apparently all one had to do to increase blog hits was mention Russell's name. She usually gets an average of 5 hits/day but got 50 hits after her Russell Crowe mention. So, this apparently isn't the Dreamworks animation being discussed for Russell. I hope there is another one still on the table. The comic adventure is set in a mythical world and centers on a scrawny teenage Viking who must capture and subdue a wild dragon. The story is based on the book by Cressida Cowell. "Dragon" is slated for a domestic release on March 26, 2010.

I liked most of his films; he was one of the directors I would have loved to see Russell work with. A few years ago, Minghella produced a special about the role of music in film (specifically Cold Mountain) that I really enjoyed. He seemed to understand how important music is to a film (and the music was about the only thing I liked about Cold Mountain!). The gunfire around us makes it hard to hear. But the human voice is different from other sounds. It can be heard over noises that bury everything else. Even when it's not shouting. Even when it's just a whisper. I copied and pasted the title of the article about Minghella but it was huge so I used Yuku's font size to make it smaller. I made it a "3" but that was quite a bit larger than this size we are using daily. So I then changed it to a "2" which is the size you see. Interesting that the font size we are using is apparently somewhere between a 2 and a 3 and is not included in their choices while posting. From now on I think I'll just type the titles I want to hyperlink. Here's one I'll be watching for. A Scott Free Production of a 2 parter on A&E. I would write a post, click on preview, and IE would give me one of those web site not found messages. Then I would try to get back to the main page and couldn't get to the site at all. It cleared up later, before yuku went down completely. I didn't know if it was IE, which I hate anyway. My old Netscape browser isn't supported any more. Sniffle, sniffle. I hate upgrades. I was probably the last person on earth to give up Netscape 4.7. So I am trying Firefox and will see how that goes. I know what some people are saying about Paul in the John Adams series. There is just something you can't put your finger on. It is not the performance itself. That is fine. It is like he doesn't fit in the time period. I think it could be just his face. Maybe that will change as the character ages. About my namesake, Cal. See those pics of Russell in SOP instantly reminded me of how Russell saw the Shakespeare character in Shakespeare in Love, as described in the GQ article: ... except the central character of William Shakespeare was not a fucking writer--he was not smelly enough, he was not unshaven enough, and obviously hadn't had enough to drink. ... Yeah, I wanted to see that grizzly fucker. I wanted to see him flower. I wanted to see him blossom under the fact of love. In an unexpected twist ahead of Friday night's clash, Luke yesterday revealed how Williams' advice stopped him from retiring two seasons ago. Too busy playing musical chairs to break into Premier League, he was about to quit and return to New Zealand with the birth of his first son looming in early 2006. But a heart-to-heart with Williams proved an unlikely godsend for Rabbitohs fans. The pair had been close for some time, with Luke living in Belmore at the club's house for young recruits and Williams a drop punt away at Campsie with his dad. "I told him about leaving the club, and he said, 'Do what's best for you and the family. Go where the money is'," Luke recalled. "It looks like he gave me the right advice. He made films for intelligent, open minded audiences who could appreciate artistic efforts ... he never pandered to us, never insulted us mindlessly, never expected anything other than thoughtful viewing of his films. How many directors are there like this anymore? He will be missed. ---------------------- About Paul in John Adams. I'm wondering if we're too used to the contemporary Paul? Men of past ages had little resemblance to the movie idols of our modern age who portray them in films. Paul's pudgy, rubbery face seems to me probably more in keeping with what our [American] actual forefathers may have looked like. I've almost forgotten this will be out this Fall. We've still heard nothing more about Tenderness, so this small supporting role in BOL may be the only Russell Crowe movie we get this year. I can't complain, though, as we had a couple of beauts last year. The reviewer says its testosterone-fueled, better than the average Terrorist themed movie, in part because it's written by William Monaghan (The Departed). He says expect a solid B+ movie this Fall. As Wing prepared to undergo surgery today that will sideline him for three months, the NRL announced that any player coming in to effect a hit on the ball carrier after he had been held by another tackler might face judiciary action. While no charge could be laid against Sydney Roosters utility Riley Brown as his eighth-minute shoulder into Wing's back was not illegal, the NRL flagged a change to the rules after an outcry over the fact that the former international was defenceless and could not move because he was being held by Roosters Braith Anasta and Anthony Tupou. The proposed change would still allow for shoulder charges - but not on a player already held by another defender. "We have already made changes to our own judiciary guidelines to ensure that shoulder charges can be treated as high tackles where necessary, and it is an area of the rules we watch closely," NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said. <snip> As they prepare to face the Bulldogs on Friday night, the Rabbitohs players are still coming to terms with what happened and boom hooker Issac Luke yesterday described the incident as "dirty". Enough voices do make a difference I guess. I hope his surgery was successful and he mends quickly. I'm sure when Russell returns he will be there to encourage him, not that he will need much. He sounds like he can't wait to get fit and back in the game.
