The next big event they have everyone will just wait till the last minute. Still not finding a lot of news out there but I expect we'll turn that corner pretty soon. I did see that plans are being made for an Outlander movie. I think there are some fans here or elsewhere in Croweland. I read the first book, and enjoyed it, and may have read the second but don't think I continued. It would make a good movie, I think. I also saw that Ben Affleck is interested in making a movie that has been hanging around H'wood for years, also from a book, and this one I really enjoyed. Replay EXCLUSIVE: Sometimes, the hottest projects in town aren’t the newest. Warner Bros is in early talks with Ben Affleck to come aboard to direct and possibly star in Replay, a Jason Smilovic-scripted adaptation of a Ken Grimwood novel. The protagonist is a 43-year old radio journalist who dies, wakes up in his 18-year old body, and gets to relive his life over and over. With his original memory intact, he takes the opportunity to travel down roads he passed up the first time around. The book was published in 1989, and Lee Rich first set it up as a movie back then. It languished, and then Smilovic turned out a script that has top leading men circling. The question will be: does Affleck play the lead role himself? He’s age appropriate and co-wrote and directed The Town primarily to give himself the killer lead role of the thief who falls in love with the bank employee during a heist. Rich and Elaine Goldsmith Thomas are producing. After the strong grosses and acclaim for The Town, Affleck is being offered a lot of stuff to direct. He is still keen on The Trade, the Dave Mandel-scripted film based on the 70s wife swap of New York Yankees pitchers Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich, Affleck is indeed interested in Replay, and in playing that starring role. He just met with Smilovic and Goldsmith Thomas, and gave them a bunch of notes. Smilovic has gone back to do another pass. Affleck won't decide his next picture until that and The Trade get new drafts. Then he'll figure out what to do next.

Neil Kaplan and Jim Kohlberg are producing for Essential Pictures. Gabaldon's series of six novels centers on an 18th century Scottish Highlander and his time-traveling wife. "Outlander" is set at the end of WWII, when an Army nurse takes a second honeymoon in Scotland with her husband and finds herself transported back to a time when the clans ruled the Highlands and her husband's English ancestors are the enemy. Peacock recently wrote "The First Grader," the runner up for the People's Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival; it was acquired by National Geographic Entertainment. Essential Pictures launched two years ago as an expansion of financing-sales shingle Essential Entertainment. The production arm is headed by Kohlberg and former Trilogy Entertainment prexy Kaplan. Peacock is repped by CAA and Principato-Young Enetertainment.

Ralph and Joseph Fiennes, James McAvoy, Daniel Day-Lewis, Emily Watson, Keira Knightley, Kate Winslet, and many other famous UK thesps don't run their own production companies or have cushy vanity deals at homegrown studios like their U.S. counterparts. “Since Britain doesn’t have a studio system, we don’t have room for vanity shingles. And when they do get set up, they tend to languish because actors then go to Hollywood for the big money,” says London-based United Agents' Lindy King. That, in a nutshell, is why so many famous UK stars are still only actors for hire. By contrast, Hollywood studios have lots of vanity deals with actors, though few with British talent behind them. Out of the roughly 150+ total first-look deals which the major Hollywood studios maintain, only 7 are with UK-based production companies and none are run by British stars -- Working Title (Universal Picture), Sam Mendes’s Neal Street Productions (Focus Features), Harry Potter-producer Heyday (Warner Bros), Wallace and Gromit-maker Aardman Animations (Sony Pictures Entertainment), Elton John’s Rocket Pictures (Walt Disney Studios), Ridley and Tony Scott’s Scott Free (Twentieth Century Fox), and James Bond factory Danjaq Productions (what's left of MGM). British producers such as Harbour Pictures (Calendar Girls), DNA Films (Never Let Me Go) and Marv Films (Kick-Ass) once had first-look deals with Disney/Miramax, Fox Searchlight, and Sony respectively but no longer. “A lot of these U.S. vanity deals are expiring or not being renewed. [But] Hollywood [should] look at the UK in terms of it's being a sweet spot. I mean, we punch above our weight in terms of talent.” Thykier used to run the Marv Films production company with Matthew Vaughn -- but their deal foundered after Sony passed on many of their projects like Kick-Ass, The Debt, and Harry Brown. Special Edition... on the cover was a model of Russell as Capt. Jack. It's not a good likeness and frankly, rather awful looking, but there are 5 pages inside dedicated to how the artist made the model. I used my phone to take some photos, as I was not going to pay $11 for for magazine, which seems to have been published in the UK. "Either you "get" him, or you don't"

BC, I'd read Outlander years ago and don't think I'll read it again, too many books, too little time. The last time I talked books with a B&N clerk I told her I'd have to get Follett's new one on the Kindle because it was so huge and she mentioned she also had a Kindle, lol. I would assume a lot of B&N people do as it came it so long before the Nook. That's an interesting M&C article but my God, that is a bad rendering of Capt. Jack. Thanks to maria a mention of TN3D at the Chicago Film Festival. Actually it's not a bad mini-review, especially for a critic who hates Haggis. I know there are a lot of them out there so I've been a little worried about that. http://www3.timeoutny.com/chicago/blog/out-and-about/author/bkenigsberg/ Last night was the festival’s now-annual surprise screening, and simply as a surprise, it turned out to be pretty decent. Unlike the previous two years’ mystery films (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and RocknRolla), Paul Haggis’s The Next Three Days (opening November 19) hadn’t already played at half the festivals in the world. I hated Haggis’s Crash, and The Next Three Days—a remake of a 2008 French film known in English as Anything for Her—suffers from some of the same hectoring, on-the-nose dialogue and preposterous plotting; the story concerns a Pittsburgh professor (Russell Crowe) who decides to break his seemingly innocent wife (Elizabeth Banks) out of jail. But the film is also quite watchable in a guilty pleasure sort of way. Haggis really needed to shed some of his pretensions, and so a paperback-potboiler exercise like this one—privileging simple momentum over any kind of specious, Grand Statement on the criminal justice system—seems like a step in the right direction for him. More on the movie when it’s released next month.
