Friday, January 28, 2011 » 03:26pm South Sydney owner Russell Crowe has defended his club's multi-million dollar deal with casino Star City, as the debate rages over the NRL's association with gambling. The club announced the sponsorship deal with the Sydney casino on Friday that will see the Star City logo appear on the front of Rabbitohs home jerseys for the next three seasons. The deal comes just days after Penrith announced the renaming of their home ground as Centrebet Stadium, while Manly will also have the Centrebet logo on the back of their jumper this season. The announcement of the sponsorships come amidst an ongoing investigation into betting irregularities during a clash between Canterbury and North Queensland last year. Souths' new commercial arrangements represent a huge backflip from Crowe and co-owner Peter Holmes a Court, who in 2007 tried to remove poker machines from Souths Leagues Club, saying that taking profit from poker machines was at odds with the club's program. 'The football club is a completely different organisation from the leagues club,' Crowe said on Friday. 'We don't have any control over what the leagues club do, they run their own game.' Crowe then defended defended the move by defining Star City as primarily an entertainment precinct and suggested society benefits from gaming revenue. 'This is an entertainment venue in general, it's not just about gaming,' said the Oscar-winning actor. 'Let's get real about this situation, we're living in a state where they're telling us that the revenue from poker machines is paying for our hospitals. 'What we're talking about here is about a connection between two organisations that are all about entertainment, that are all about the future of Sydney.' Souths chief executive Shane Richardson echoed the views expressed by NRL chief executive David Gallop this week that the association between sport and gambling 'is as old as sport itself'. 'Let's be honest no sport in the world could ignore it, we're not holier than thou, the NFL, the English Premier League, wherever it is, there's gambling,' Richardson said. 'As David Gallop said all along, it's going to be there, it's a major part of what sport is whether we like it or not and we've got to be part of it to have some sort of control over it.' Crowe admitted that his own personal opinions were at loggerheads with the deal and recognised that problem gamblers, who account for 40 per cent of gambling revenue, was an issue of concern. 'I don't like them (poker machines), I'm not a fan of them I've made that clear in the past. 'But in life I am a gambler. The fact that I took on South Sydney underlines that.' The Academy Award-winning actor and part-owner of South Sydney yesterday admitted that his views on sticking with the status quo went against the current thinking within the corridors of power at the NRL. There are seven syndicates that have expressed interest of seeking entry into the competition. Crowe also said he had advised Nathan Tinkler against going ahead with the coal magnate's proposed $100 million privatisation of the Newcastle Knights. Tinkler's takeover offer will be put to the Knights' members at a meeting in March, after the Newcastle club directors last week agreed in principle to accept the revised offer from the Tinkler Group. If approved by the rank-and-file members, Tinkler's buyout will clear the cash-strapped Knights of more than $4m debt. "If Nathan Tinkler does take over, the Knights are going to be as powerful as the Broncos in a couple of seasons, even though I told him not to go ahead with the buyout," Crowe said. "We sat down and had a chat and I told him, 'don't do it mate'. "It (running a football club) takes up a lot more time than you can imagine. "But Nathan Tinkler isn't doing it as a hobby. He's doing it because it's his team, the team he grew up supporting and he's doing it for the simple reason he's trying to inspire his district. "That's why I've done it here (at South Sydney). "I remember when I was seven years old, when they won the premiership. It made me feel 10-foot tall. "Newcastle are in a much better position than where we are at Souths. "They have a nice little stadium in a one-team town. "I also believe Newcastle's situation is less complicated than what we face at South Sydney. "I do wish him all the best. But in the end it would probably be the best thing to happen to the Knights, having a single voice in control and having somebody who can actually take the talented people they have there like (executive chairman) Ken Edwards to push them forward." Crowe said he remained committed to the NRL staying as it was for now -- a 16-club competition. "If you were running any kind of business that was franchiseable, would you expand when 14 of 16 franchisees aren't turning a profit?" Crowe asked at a sponsorship announcement yesterday. The Rabbitohs secured Star City casino as a major co-sponsor on a three-year deal. Details of the sponsorship remain confidential, but The Weekend Australian understands that it will add several million dollars to Souths' bottom line. "I wouldn't necessarily agree to expansion right now," Crowe said. "I think the Independent Commission should be focused on the power of the teams. "I think it is a little inelegant for me to discuss it," continued Bettany. "I had been working for five months steadily and my son missed me and I missed my son. Both of my sons and my wife," explained the actor, referring to his work on "The Tourist" as Inspector John Acheson. Bettany is married to actress Jennifer Connelly and they have two sons together. "Do I regret it?" said Bettany. "I regret not working with such amazing, amazing actors and directors and writers. But no, I have to do the right thing by my family every time."

I think any reasonable person can make a distinction between his personal opposition to Pokies in the Leagues Club to supporting a business decision of having as a sponsor a gambling casino. But since it's Russell, there is no way the press isn't going to have a field day with his apparent 'hypocrisy'. The guy tried to do a good thing and he higlighted the damage poker machines do in this state. He hasn't had a 100% success in his goal. But not a 100% failure either And here's the real pity - This should have been a 'happy' event - huge sponsor, huge money and the financially stability of a long term contract. For a team like Souths and for an owner who has done nothing but bleed money and pound the pavement relentlessly for revenue streams for his club this should have a day to nothing but celebrate. And here's the real pity - This should have been a 'happy' event - huge sponsor, huge money and the financially stability of a long term contract. For a team like Souths and for an owner who has done nothing but bleed money and pound the pavement relentlessly for revenue streams for his club this should have a day to nothing but celebrate. I agree CGee. Even tho the press does know his personal views on gambling it is their chance to pick on him again. Sounds like a great deal to me. Boy, that Greg Inglis is sure a scary looking big fella. Wow I hardly recognized Paul Betteny. Maybe it's for a new role. He certainly has his priorites straight.

We also were able to wear our favorite footballl jersey and jeans...so I wore my 100 anniversary SSFC shirt. Now that was fun! Oh, I am a lonely painter.
